Shani's Story of Struggle to Strength- Raahui Pookeka's Aunty to the Hood

Shani’s journey is a story of resilience, courage, and giving back. Raised by her Koko and Nan in Huntly, she grew up playing golf and enjoying a privileged childhood, but by her teens, rebellion, addiction, and life choices led her down a dark path. From meth use and gang involvement to losing her way as a young parent, Shani faced challenges that would have broken many.

Through it all, she found strength in her tupuna, supportive mentors like youth worker Donyelle Wirihanga, and the power of returning to her roots. Reconnecting with her community, Shani discovered her purpose: supporting rangatahi and whanau, creating positive pathways, and leading transformative programs like the Kaitiaki Project. She now inspires young people, shares her story to guide others, and uses golf as a way to open opportunities and build confidence.

“Once you’ve lived and seen it, you can’t unsee it. You have to walk alongside those going through it.”
