A Legacy of Love, Healing and Opportunity Across Generations

At just 14 years old, James Downes made a choice. Growing up surrounded by hardship, alcohol, violence and the struggles of his childhood, James knew he wanted a different future for the family he would one day have. He chose to break through.

‍

‍

He chose to build a family grounded in love, strength, connection, care and opportunity— and that choice became the foundation for everything that followed.

‍

‍

From Taumarunui, James and his whānau spent years giving back to their community — opening their home and businesses, supporting young people and creating spaces where people could feel safe, valued and loved. But their approach has always been shaped by something powerful: lived experience.

‍

‍

They understand that real change doesn't always come from someone telling you what you should do. Sometimes it comes from someone who has walked a similar road, understands the struggle and can sit alongside you without judgement.

‍

‍

Their work has gown from that understanding, grounded in the belief that whānau themselves hold knowledge, strength and solutions. But after years of pouring into their community, they also realised something important: Their own whānau needed that same love and care too. So the work came home.

‍

‍

Now, two generations later, the choice James made at 14 is still rippling through his family. His sons, nieces, nephews and grandchildren are carrying forward the love, strength and values he worked so hard to build.

‍

‍

Some have faced trauma, addiction, violence and the weight of experiences passed down through generations. But through their own lived experience, they are learning to heal, reconnect and help others do the same.

‍

‍

At their special place near Taumarunui and Ruapehu, multiple generations are coming together to create a space where people can rest, reflect, reconnect and find a pathway forward.

This isn't simply a story about trauma. It's a story about what can happen when lived experience becomes wisdom, when community becomes part of the healing, and when one generation chooses to create something different for the next.

‍

‍

A story about a father who chose love. A whānau that chose to give. A community that chooses to lead from within and a legacy that is still being carried forward. Because one choice can change a life. One life can change a whānau. And one whānau can change generations.
